Senior Wellness Visits

Make their Golden Years the Greatest

We have a particular fondness for our frosty-faced friends at Bayview Veterinary Center, and we’re ready to treat them with all the love and care they deserve! Our pets age much faster than we do, and providing the proper care for your senior cat or dog is essential to ensure they have as many happy and healthy years with you as possible.

Generally, we recommend a physical exam every six months for senior pets. While annual exams are OK for most adult pets, a lot can change in the year of a senior pet! Exams every six months allow our veterinarians to closely monitor your pet’s health and detect and address any issues as early as possible.

In addition to what’s included in a routine exam, your pet’s senior wellness visit may include:

  • Dietary consultation: We’ll make sure your pet’s diet is appropriate for their changing nutritional needs.
  • Arthritis and pain assessment: Old age often comes with aches and pains, but there’s a lot we can do to keep your senior pet feeling great.
  • Routine diagnostics: We often recommend routine bloodwork or other diagnostics for senior pets to screen for any changes in organ health or function.
  • Cognition and mentation assessment: Like older humans, our senior pets can develop cognitive dysfunction as they age.

When Is My Pet Considered a Senior?

We get this question a lot! Although this can vary slightly depending on the breed and size of your pet, we generally consider any dog or cat seven years of age or older to be starting their early senior years. We can help you determine when it’s time to begin considering senior care for your pet more precisely during your visit with us.
